📢 NTW Report 2024 🗓️ Released on December 4, 2024
Nuclear Transparency Watch is proud to present its comprehensive Activity report 2024, detailing key developments, contextual changes, and activities related to nuclear transparency and safety over the past year.
Highlights:
Key elements of the European context in 2024
War in Ukraine: Continued impacts on nuclear safety, including threats to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and increased risks at other facilities in Ukraine. Despite the conflict, Russia’s nuclear energy sector remains resilient, with significant global revenues.
Global Political Shifts: The growing international support for nuclear energy is marked by major initiatives such as the EU’s nuclear “alliance,” financial backing from 14 institutions, and the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels.
Nuclear Energy Trends: In 2024, 100 reactors operated across the EU with an average age of 39 years. Wind and solar energy capacity continue to outpace nuclear installations, with renewable energy surpassing nuclear production in Europe.
Challenges in Nuclear Safety: Reports from ENSREG and WENRA show delays in safety upgrades and concerns over the rising costs of lifetime extensions versus cheaper alternatives.
